Plumari Private Reserve on which African Hills Safari Lodge is located is the closest Big Game reserve to Johannesburg.

Our game viewing drives are available for morning and afternoon trips, as this is when the animals are most active.

You will be accompanied by a skilled ranger and guests can expect to encounter a diverse range of animals and bird species.

There are more than 20 species of larger animals, as well as several types of antelope and plains game, not to mention smaller species like antbears, hyena, porcupine and honey badgers.

These drives make for spectacular viewing.

Get close and personal with our resident elephants, Damara and Nzewe.
It gives you the chance to learn about African Elephants, both wild and habituated as you interact and feed these gentle giants.

Guided Bush Walk

Feel Africa underfoot on a guided bush walk with a trained game ranger over the varying terrains of the reserve.

This experience offers an intimate encounter with nature and wildlife identifying medicinal and other plants en route as well as a variety of insects and birds.

Here you can gain a true perspective of the fauna and flora indigenous to the area. Your guide will point out animal tracks, dung, hiding spots, rare birds and educate you on the history of the area. Discover rock carvings along the way in what is said to be the oldest mountain range on earth – the Magaliesberg. Don’t forget your binoculars!

Museum & Ox Wagons – Free Entry

The Plumari Heritage Museum, or “Hall of History,” houses one of the largest collections of imported horse-drawn carriages and locally made Cape Carts. The ox wagon display features bokwa and three kakebeen waens, including a rare Boer

Ambulance from circa 1896—one of only two Anglo-Boer War ambulances remaining in the world.

San Rock Engravings

Our accompanied hikes to see the Petroglyphs (Rock Engravings) offer you the ideal opportunity to learn about the finest art created in pre-historic times.

The artists who created these images lived and worked in the Magaliesberg Valley between the Stone Age and Iron Age (approx.. 2000 – 500 years ago).

A short walk to the top of the hill reveals the skills of these people in their near perfect images of various animals with little more than a piece of metallic rock and at best, a crudely fashioned iron spike.
